Hi,

I'm a little bit confused here. I have read the FAQ's, and sort of found what I'm looking for, but still not really getting it. Let me explain:
I have a horsey forum, which I made up, and now run. It is from proboards, so they give me the option to change the avatars that evryone uses. I saved some of these horsey avatars(it's a horsey forum) onto my computer, but when I read the FAQ's it said
"This refers to personal use only. You may not re-distribute or offer for download any of the avatars on AllAvatars in any form or as any part of a collection."
Would this include giving the option for people to use them on my forum. I could ask them not to save any of them, and they would only be using them as an avatar on my site. So do you see why I am really confused???Any help offered would be much appreciated Smile

The problem with webmasters downloading avatars and using them as default avatars on their forums is that the artists will never get credit for their work. The whole purpose of AllAvatars is to give artists credit. They can't get credit if their names aren't associated with their avatars.

The BEST thing you could do would be to post a highly visible link in your forums to AllAvatars. Maybe create a Sticky thread with info about the site and a link. Or, I think it would be ok if you downloaded a few 'sample' avatars to use in your forums, then list AllAvatars as the source and suggest people find more free avatars here.

Would it be allright when i put them into a category (the users choose the categorie bevore they see the avatars located inside) "from allavatars.com"
(and some notice on the forumnews example:
Example wrote:

*added some avatars to the galerie, these are provided by allavatar.com check these side to find more about who made them and maybe find some other nice you personaly like more)

That should be ok if you download a few sample avatars to use in your forum. Please also make "AllAvatars.com" a hyperlink that your users can click on to visit this site.

I actually had the same question after reading the FAQ: I'm implementing my own little "Comments" system (users of my website can leave comments for my own drawings).

When writing comments the users can choose an icon out of 16 predefined ones which I would take from allavatars.com.

So after reading this thread I understand this would be okay, as long as I give credit to allavatars.com? Since my website is of non-commercial nature and it is all about art (from me Smile) itself I would be willing to provide whatever link/author mentioning/etc. you ask me for.

I could imagine the following:

* When entering the comment and choosing an avatar icon link to allavatars.com just underneath the icon (as visible URL), something like "These icons are provided by allavatars.com and created by various artists."

* Make the icons themselves hyperlinked to allavatars.com when they appear in the actual comment entry.

* Provide the author's name (where provided on allavatars.com itself) and allavatars.com as URL in the 'title' property of the <img> tag.

So would that be okay for you and the authors? I'm very well aware that I'm using someone else's art here, but I would be willing to give full credit for this. Else I would be forced to draw my own icons, and I don't have the time (and capability Wink) to do so...

Thanks a lot, Oliver

p.s. The website is not yet online, so I cannot provide you with a "that's what it would look like", but I hope you get the idea what I'm trying to do.

Hi Oliver,

Your project usage sounds just fine. As long as there is an accessible link back to Allavatars.com so people can see where the avatars came from and find links to the artists sites, etc.

Also, using the artist's name in the image alt tag isn't required, but it is a nice idea. I'm sure they would appreciate it.

Feel free to post your website here when you have the avatars implemented!

I will do so: there will be a link just below the "avatar selection box" and in each appearing avatar <img title> tag. Also I will include allavatars.com in the separate "Links" page. Because I really like your site, and the fact that you seem to be connected in some way to epilogue.net is really cool - I found out about that page some years (?) ago and it inspired me to do the same (although in much smaller scale off course).

Well I actually thought even about the title attribute so when the mouse hovers over the avatar icon the author's name (together with your URL again, as mentioned above) will appear.

I even thought about making the icons clickable, but I don't like having too many hyperlinks on a page. It confuses the users. Will think about that later.

I will happily do so Smile But as of now the entire site (apart from some "teaser" images) is not even online and "done when it's done" ...

Thanks, Oliver

Hi there,

I hope my english is good enough Wink

My question is quit similar to the other ones. We plan to deactivate the option that user can upload their own avatars due to copyright problems. So we need to offer a good selection of alternativ avatars. So we wish to upload avatars from AllAvatars to our server.
My question ist: is it adequate to set a link to AllAvatars in an extra topic and/or into the imprint or do I have to set a banner onto the startsite? Or do you refuse the permission completely?

It's a selfhelp-forum for potentially suicidal people, so we use our startsite to inform about telephonenumbers and websites of helpingorganisations and other selfhelp-forum with other focal points. Other banners and links would be disturbing (or distracting the right word?).
